Vice President and Chief Information Officer
AGL Resources
Joe Surber became vice president and chief information officer at AGL Resources in November 2008. He has been an integral part of the company’s Information Technology department since 2004.
As chief information officer, Mr. Surber is responsible for the ongoing enhancement of the company’s technology platform in alignment with business goals. Recognized as a strategic thinker with the ability to bridge business and technology, Mr. Surber counsels AGL Resources business leaders and technical teams on how to design and deliver solutions that maximize value for the company.
Previously, Mr. Surber served the company as managing director responsible for all applications, networking, telecommunications and data center operations supporting AGL Resources and its companies: Atlanta Gas Light, Virginia Natural Gas, Chattanooga Gas, Elizabethtown Gas (New Jersey), Elkton Gas (Maryland), Florida City Gas, SouthStar and other energy and infrastructure holdings.
Mr. Surber began his career at IBM and BankSouth before serving as a partner in technology consulting.
Mr. Surber is an active member of the community. He is the 2010 Technology Campaign Chair of the Metro Atlanta United Way and a member of the campaign cabinet. He is an active supporter of Habitat for Humanity, Techbridge, Computers for Youth, Women in Technology and the Technology Association of Georgia. His industry leadership is recognized through his service on the Technology Advisory Council of the American Gas Association: He is the incoming Vice Chair.
Mr. Surber is a finalist for the 2010 Georgia CIO of the Year awards and has been selected to participate in the 2010 Regional Leadership Institute of the Atlanta Regional Commission.
Mr. Surber earned his bachelors degree from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Yancey, live in Norcross, Ga., with their three children.
