Ralph Cleveland was named executive vice president, engineering and operations, in December 2008. Primary among his responsibilities is executive oversight of the policy direction for the supply chain and technical operations activities of AGL Resources.  He is also chairman and chief executive officer of several AGL Resources commercial and operating subsidiaries.  Prior to this role, Mr. Cleveland served as senior vice president, engineering and operations, and as vice president, engineering and construction.

Mr. Cleveland also has served as vice president of operations for the then newly acquired subsidiary utility, Virginia Natural Gas, where he was responsible for integration of operations and engineering activities as well as executive oversight of field service, distribution operations, local engineering design and construction, pipeline operations, propane peak shaving operations and customer care.

He began his career at AGL Resources as manager of Southeast Georgia operations with Atlanta Gas Light and was responsible for operation activities for the coastal Georgia region.  Prior to his work in local gas distribution, he spent more than a decade in oil and gas research, development and production; natural gas processing; and petrochemical industries.

Mr. Cleveland is the chairman and chief executive officer of the North American Energy Standards Board; a national board member of the American Association of Blacks in Energy; a board member for the American Institute for Managing Diversity; and a regional board member for Junior Achievement and Teach for America. He is president and founder of the Capital and Enterprise Development Group, a non-profit endeavor that is dedicated to economic inclusion and socio-economic development. He is a life member of the National Black MBA Association, the National Society of Black Engineers, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity as well as being a member of 100 Black Men, South Metro.

Mr. Cleveland has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America by SaVoy Magazine and an Outstanding Georgia Citizen by the Secretary of the State of Georgia. He received the honor of being one of Atlanta’s Men of Distinction as recognized by the Atlanta Business League and Who’s Who in Black Atlanta.

A native of Macon, Ga., Mr. Cleveland received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, completed post-graduate studies in mechanical engineering at Rice University in Houston, and received his master’s degree in business administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.
